Or nieces, nephews, god kids, your neighbors kids...anyone you are influencing in the ways of appreciating cars. WesBartons89's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! earlier brought back the whole idea of having a sub blog dedicated to raising kids with an eye toward 4 (or 2) wheel appreciation. I have brought it up in the past to good reaction. Who is in, who wants authorship, what is a good name for it, and would it be appreciated (and how the heck do I actually make a sub blog). I have so much more content that I have held back because I don't want to turn Oppo into the Facebook of cars.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Excuse my squidliness in the above pic. I would never ride like that, just started up the old '37 for Greta

No kids yet (not married, need to work on that I guess) , but I do have three baby cousins that will definitely be indoctrinated into cars. By their parents and me, so there's no way it can fail.

Since I made the other post, you know I do, lol. One daughter, 2 1/2, no other kids yet. As I said, I think you should make the sub-blog, I can't tell you how though, I'm not sure. Somebody in the other post suggested the name Oppotots, and I like that name myself. Figure it out, and go for it. And I would love authorship if you do make it.

No kids, but my niece loves my BRZ. She's a little afraid of the MR2 still, though. I don't know why. It could have something to do with the sheer amount of noise that comes from it.

I have never seen anything tagged with it. Tags are greatly underused here anyways, I am guilty of it as well. I see a sub blog as being more enticing to a new crowd of people to kinja though, alot of parent type people might be turned off of normal day to day Oppo or using a tag

I would love to be involved. I have watched myself go from a little Saturn SC1 with a 5 speed that I used to hoon mercilessly into a Minivan/Crewcab pickup person. Still love to wrench my own and I try not to own anything newer than 2000. My wife has a newer car for saftey/comfort purposes.

Man, I am trying. I got two boys age 13 and 15. But they just don't have the patience to do good, safe work. I used to manage a bicycle shop as well, so I have a full bike repair set up in my basement in addition to car stuff. I am going to start them on bicycles first and see if they can grasp the whole 3-dimesional/spatial concepts that one needs to be a decent mechanic.

I said it to hammerhead as this. If I want to share my work or someone elses and actually try and build it, what are the chances that we share the tag, and the end user clicks through to see NSFW right at the top, or some theme day. I think that the parent group would be the first to say that they are out of there because of that, hence my idea to sub blog it.
Also I was unaware you had a bun in the oven. Congrats Tom!

So hard to get them to focus man! Smartphones and computers have ruined their ability to really dig into complex, multi-step operations. Never mind the problem solving. Everything has a cheat sheet and shortcut, so they think everything should be that way. I preach to them all the time, "slow down and THINK it out. Draw it or write it if that helps. But take your time." Rush, rush, rush. Not in the mechanical world.

wow yeah, I try and train my kids that technology is great when used in accordance to pre prescribed methods, such as a manual, or as a supplement. Mainly because of this trend these days. By all means google why your Saab has heat on only one side. But you are going to be the one to figure out how to get in there and fix it, and THEN put it back together correctly. It is a great lesson in patience. Best thing my parents ever did, and my dad was a super tech geek (I had a Timex computer growing up, the one that read tapes, and a full size plotter his engineering dept was throwing out), was to buy me a 59 bus when I was 9, and give me a set of hand tools, and Miurs Idiots guide. Without that background I might be driving a goddamn prius right now.

Two kids, 8 and 5(girls).
The older one likes to "invent" things...one day told me we have to go buy two engines for her invention(some kind of robotic doll scoop up device/RV type thing). Told her we should start small, with a Lego prototype.
The younger one is a straight-up grease monkey. Tried to get her to "help" with my PCH...but she wasn't happy holding and passing tools. When I did brakes on my DD...she was pulling and tightening bolts, showed her how to collapse the piston on the caliper, and she cleaned the new rotors. We also watch "car shows" together.

Word man. I had one of those 150-in-1 electronics kits when I was a kid. After that...it was onward and upward. Scale models of cars, rocketry...always tinkering and more importantly, learning how to figure stuff out. I tell my kids all the time that I will not GIVE them answers, I will show them how to find it though. I had an Apple II, or was it a IIc, who knows.
Mechanical aptitude just saves SO much money man. The jack for the charger on the family laptop stopped working (engineering/design flaw, but that is another story). I took it apart and soldered in a new jack. My kids came home from school and were slack jawed. I told them there was a DIY on the internet and I have the tools, why should I not be able to fix it? They looked confused...

I'll only share a quick story because I think my nephew is going to be something beyond a gear head. As soon as he could speak, and I am not making this up, he started to identify cars properly. By two years old when I tell him to get me my old green jeep, a black diablo, a red tesla, and classic mini cooper, he will walk to his hot wheels and pick out exactly what I asked in the model and color. When he goes to car shows people are amazed a 2 1/2 year old can name off the wall cars (lancia, panoz, morgan) than adults can. All day every day we play with cars. I don't know where this obsession started from, but I became the coolest uncle with all my lotus.

Yeah man, my kids come to me all of the time, "such and such is broken." My usual response is, "no..it is not working. There is a HUGE gap between not working and broken." The computer is NOT broken, it won't charge when plugged in. Let's find out why and address it.

and no traction there? My kids have broken stuff to the "not working" point, and I usually assist them in fixing the issue. From toys, to well, this stuff (although they didnt break it, still good for a little girl to see an engine installed)
. It is just good to have some interest to start with.

I have a 27 year old daughter that isn't a motorhead, but since she grew up in our house....she was used to seeing me keep all our cars neat and clean. Result? She has a new 2015 Outback that she keeps spotless.
We also have a 21 year old son, that has a 2000 Saturn SL2. He knows to keep the tires inflated and how to check all the fluids and change the oil, but as long as he can see through the windshield....it's good to go.
He has washed it once in the past year (I have washed it a couple times) but he'll be driving this car until it blows up. If it last for 15 more years...he'll be driving it-it's all about getting from Point A to Point B for him.
I guess this attitude will probably save him a lot of money of the course of his lifetime......it's just an appliance to him.
